H&R has been developing performance suspension since 1980, with its road-car products shaped by decades of work in international motorsport. The brand is best known for vehicle-specific lowering springs and suspension components designed to improve body control, reduce ride height and give the chassis a more focused setup.
At Darkside Developments, we supply H&R suspension for selected VAG, BMW, MINI and Porsche applications. We look at H&R as part of the wider suspension setup, not just as a way to lower the car. Spring choice, damper condition, ride height and alignment all affect how the finished car will behave.

H&R was founded over 45 years ago by Werner Heine and Heinrich Remmen, with the company built around developing road-car suspension that could lower the vehicle while still improving the way it handled.
That early focus on controlled lowering shaped the brand into a broader suspension specialist. H&R now develops springs and chassis components for road and performance applications, with experience from international motorsport feeding into product development.
The company remains family-run today, now under its second and third generations. Suspension spring production also remains in Germany at H&R’s facility in the Sauerland region, where the company keeps manufacturing under its own control.
H&R develops its products around the individual vehicle rather than just chasing the biggest possible drop. Spring behaviour, damper condition and suspension geometry all still matter once the car is lowered, especially if the goal is to improve how it drives as well as how it sits.
H&R Springs & Suspension
Lowering springs change more than just ride height. Reducing the distance between the body and the road also changes how much suspension travel is available, how the dampers work through their stroke and how the chassis responds under braking, cornering and acceleration.
H&R develops its spring kits around individual applications instead of using one generic spring rate across different vehicles. The aim is to lower the car while keeping the suspension controlled and predictable, whether the car is used every day or set up for more enthusiastic road driving.
Darkside supplies H&R lowering springs for a range of applications, including:
Applications include everything from Golf, Leon, Octavia and A3 platform cars through to BMW 1, 3 and 4 Series models, with individual spring kits varying by chassis, axle load and suspension specification.

Why We Recommend H&R
“H&R is the sort of spring kit we recommend when somebody wants the car lower, but does not want to ruin the way it drives just to get the stance they are after. A good lowering spring should work with the rest of the suspension, not fight against it. That means the drop, spring rate, damper condition and alignment all need to make sense together. For road cars and fast-road builds, H&R gives us a sensible option where the customer wants a noticeable drop and tighter body control without going straight to coilovers.”

H&R FAQs
Do I need an alignment after fitting H&R springs?
Yes, we would recommend checking the alignment after fitting lowering springs. Changing ride height can alter suspension geometry, including toe and camber. An alignment allows the car to be checked and adjusted where possible so it drives properly and does not wear tyres unnecessarily. If you need help with fitting and alignment, take a look at our workshop and get in touch.
Are H&R springs made in Germany?
Yes. H&R suspension springs are manufactured at the company’s facility in the Sauerland region of Germany.
How much do H&R springs lower a car?
The amount of lowering depends on the exact vehicle and spring kit. Different applications can have different drop figures depending on the original suspension, axle weight and model specification. Always check the individual product listing for the stated lowering range.
Need Help Choosing the Right H&R Suspension?
If you are unsure which H&R springs are right for your car, get in touch with your vehicle details and query. We can help you check the correct application, whether the standard dampers are suitable, and whether any additional suspension work or alignment should be carried out at the same time.
