This is also known as the ‘Temp Sender' and is used to measure the temperature of the coolant running through the engine

The most common symptom that this sensor is not working is when the engine is hard to start whilst warm. It will start up perfectly when cold, but takes a long time when warm. Swapping this sensor will cure this problem.
