As we plan to run our A5 on the track and have a trip to Spa and the Nurburgring planned in a few weeks time, we thought it wise to install at least a half roll cage, and from past track car experience, we wanted bucket seats and harnesses too to stops us sliding around!

We had a look online and nothing that was easily obtainable (most cages were in the USA) or reasonably priced, so we decided to speak to Matt at Slide Motorsport, as they made the cage in our BMW.

After a bit of discussion we realised the price for the first cage in our car would be reasonable, but when making batches the prices were a little too much to then be able to market to potential customers, so we decided to contact Custom Cages and get their take on the job, as they are set up for volume production.

Our Arosa runs a Custom Cages 6 point affair and that fitted quite well, so we were confident that they were able to offer a product that customers could install themselves without the use of cutting and welding equipment.

After a couple of crude sketches, calls and emails, we had some indicative pricing from Kevin @ Custom Cages, so the car was booked in and we organised the removal of the gearbox while the car was away for 2 weeks to get the cage installed.

After a quick tour of their workshop, which was full of brand new Bentleys and BTCC cars, the A5 was left for those guys to work their magic. 2 weeks later we came to collect, the cage was perfect, exactly what we wanted.

We also wanted to make sure that fitting the bucket seats would still only be a bolt in job without having to weld in brackets or seat runners, so the guys at Custom Cages also helped out by supplying some 12mm aluminium profiles that we could customise to our own specification to help with the installation of the seat side mounts.
The Schroth harnesses finished off the 1st installation and upon road testing the car feels so much nicer to drive due to being held into the seat properly by the high sides and the 4 Point harnesses. It will be a joy to drive on track!!

So if you have an A5, S5 or RS5 then you can get it track ready!
