Recently we have experimented with Thermal Imaging technology, in particular the TOPDON TC002C Infrared Camera, a specialised thermal imaging camera compatible with iOS Type-C devices such as the iPhone 15 & 16 models. But how does this revolutionize the Motorsport / Automotive industry?

Motorsport

To achieve record breaking lap times, temperature has a big role to play. Whether this is IAT's (Intake Air Temperatures), EGT's (Exhaust Gas Temperatures), Brakes or Tyre Temperatures, each contribute to the vehicles performance and driveability.

Working towards breaking the Fastest VAN Lap Record around the Nürburgring we took the Caddy and S5 TDI for a spin around Oulton Park.

Here we were able to test out the TOPDON TC002C Thermal Camera and it's capabilities. During testing, as usual tyre wear and temperatures are a key aspects to monitor. Using TOPDON's camera we could clearly see an accurate reading along with an easy-to-read colour gradient which shows where the tyre makes the majority of contact against the tarmac. Monitoring the tyre temperatures and contact points provides us with critical information on the vehicles geometry and allows to to make any adjustments if required.

Engine Temperatures

As you may already know here at Darkside we specialise in VAG / BMW and Porsche Diesel Tuning, lower temperatures are crucial to pushing these engines to the limit. We already have software to read precise figures so why would we need to take temperature readings from outside of the vehicle?

Using the TOPDON Thermal Imaging Camera we are able to determine how heat is dissipated within the engine bay. For example if the exhaust manifold transfers heat to the intake system this will in term raise the IAT's (Intake Air Temps), viewing the engine bay via thermal imaging we can decipher where heat protection is needed the most, ie. Turbo Blankets, Exhaust Wrap, Reflective Tape etc. We can also view trapped heat where we could possibly benefit from air ducts, intake scoops or bonnet vents.
